In Tsafe West District, Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State, life has become a living nightmare for residents. Armed bandits, led by the notorious Dan Isuhu, have imposed an oppressive “taxation system,” demanding a staggering N172.7 million from 25 villages, along with agricultural produce like sacks of beans. This extortion has left villagers in despair, forcing many to abandon their homes and farms.
The demands are relentless and vary from village to village:
Gijinzama: N8.5 million
Dakolo: N5 million + 20 bags of beans
Kibari: N3 million
Kunchin Kalgo: N20 million
Sungawa: N15 million
Yalwa: N2.7 million
The list goes on, painting a grim picture of systemic extortion.
The bandits rule with an iron fist, issuing threats of violence against those unable to comply. Villagers describe a life of constant fear. “If we don’t pay, they’ll kill us or destroy everything we own,” one resident shared. The resulting exodus has emptied farms and homes, leaving the district eerily quiet.
The ripple effects are devastating. Farms are abandoned, businesses shuttered, and families forced to sell their livestock to meet demands. “I closed my shop because there’s no one left to buy anything,” lamented a shopkeeper. With livelihoods destroyed, hunger and hopelessness loom large.
