Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have recorded significant operational successes in the Timbuktu Triangle, as sustained military pressure continues to degrade terrorist networks operating in the area.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, troops cleared and dominated key terrorist enclaves in Tergejeri, Chiralia, and the Ajigin and Abirma general areas, forcing fleeing insurgents into disarray.

Lieutenant Colonel Uba said intermittent encounters occurred during the operations, with troops engaging the terrorists with effective firepower, leading to the neutralisation of several insurgents.

He disclosed that on 20 January 2026, while consolidating at a harbour location about six kilometres north of Chiralia, troops intercepted two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices. One of the devices was successfully neutralised, while the second breached the defensive position, affecting some logistics platforms.

The attack, he said, resulted in the loss of some gallant soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, while others sustained injuries.

The wounded were immediately evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. During the evacuation, Nigerian Air Force platforms from the Air Component, working in synergy with Nigerian Army air assets, provided continuous aerial cover to ensure the safety of ground forces and support further neutralisation of fleeing terrorists.

Lieutenant Colonel Uba further revealed that troops later discovered mass graves containing about 20 terrorist bodies, believed to have been buried by their associates after previous encounters with troops in the Timbuktu Triangle.

He said the discovery exposes the scale of terrorist losses and contradicts propaganda claims by the insurgents.

The Media Information Officer stated that security across the theatre remains generally stable, with troops maintaining high morale and operational effectiveness.
He reaffirmed that Operation HADIN KAI remains fully committed to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks, and restoring lasting peace and security in the North East
