Academic and non-academic staff of the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, have embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved issues with the Katsina State Government.
The industrial action, which began on Monday, November 3, has grounded all academic and administrative activities at the state-owned university.
According to reports, the workers decided to down tools after the government allegedly ignored several appeals to address pressing issues affecting the institution.
Among the grievances raised by the unions include poor staff welfare, inadequate running funds, the withdrawal of management control over the university’s online portal, and neglect of student welfare.
A senior member of the staff union, who spoke under anonymity, said the strike was the last resort after all efforts to engage the government failed.
“We have been patient for long. Our welfare and working conditions have been deteriorating, yet the government keeps promising without action. We want the public to know that this strike is not political but about justice and fairness for UMYU workers,” the source said.
However, in a swift response, the Katsina State Government dismissed the claims, saying it is committed to improving the education sector and resolving any challenges facing the university.
A government spokesperson maintained that the administration is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the smooth operation of all tertiary institutions in the state.
The strike has left many students stranded on campus, with lectures, examinations, and administrative activities suspended until further notice.
Education analysts have urged both parties to return to the negotiation table to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar and safeguard the reputation of one of the state’s leading universities.
