Nigeria’s Super Falcons have taken a strong step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating the Benin Republic Amazons 2–0 in the first leg of their qualifier played on Friday.
The match, held at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto-Novo, saw goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo secure victory for the nine-time African champions.
Ihezuo opened the scoring in the 18th minute, converting a precise cross after a spell of dominant possession by the Falcons. Okoronkwo then doubled the lead in the second half with a well-placed strike, giving Nigeria a comfortable advantage ahead of the return leg.
Coach Justin Madugu praised his players for their composure and teamwork, noting that the team’s focus now shifts to the second leg, which will take place at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, October 28.
“It’s a good result, but the job is not done yet. We will return home and finish strong to seal qualification,” Madugu said.
The Super Falcons are aiming to maintain their record of consistent appearances at the WAFCON, having won the continental title nine times — more than any other nation.
The winner of the two-legged tie will advance to the final qualification round of the 2026 WAFCON, which serves as a pathway to the next FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
