The attention of Zamfara State Police Command has been drawn to an alleged extortion against Police officers at filling stations by the state taskforce chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Dauran, where he addressed the Press on Tuesday 1st March, 2022, accusing the Police of extortion at filling stations in the name of enforcing security in the ongoing fuel scarcity in the state.
He went further to warn the Police to desist from going to the filling stations, since the taskforce Committee has not invited them.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Command has not received any complaint of extortion against Police officers from members of the public, filling stations or any stakeholder in the petroleum sector in the state.
Similarly, the Taskforce Committee under Dauran has not at any time lodge a verbal or written complaint of any misconduct of Police personnel at any filling station in the state, only to see an online story attributed to Abubakar M. Dauran, accusing the Police of such misconduct.
The Command therefore views the allegation of Abubakar Dauran as not only deformative and misleading but also an attempt to discredit his former constituency (the Nigeria Police Force) as well as to sabotage the relentless effort of His Excellency the Executive Governor of Zamfara Dr. Mohammed Bello in ensuring peace and stability are sustained in this period of fuel scarcity in the state.
The Command uses this medium to challenge Dauran to proof his allegations to enable the Commissioner of Police takes decisive action against any of its personnel indicted.
The Command also reminds members of the public that, the Nigeria Police is a lead agency in internal security, and it has the constitutional mandate to deploy its personnel anywhere to ensure protection of lives and properties and to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
At the same time, Abubakar Dauran like any other citizen has a responsibility to observe and report any Police misconduct to the appropriate authority for action.
While the Command assures the Public that it will leave no stone unturned in taking appropriate action against any of its erring personnel.
