Southern Borno Leaders Rally Support for Governor Zulum, Donate N200m for Maiduguri Flood Victims

Borno State Deputy Governor, Hon. Umar Kadafur, and Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume led a high-profile delegation from Southern Borno Senatorial District on Tuesday to offer sympathies to Governor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi, following the devastating flood that has affected 70% of Maiduguri.

The flood, which began on Monday evening, has claimed lives, left many missing, displaced over two million residents, and caused the destruction of infrastructure worth billions of naira.

Speaking at the Government House, Senator Ndume explained that the visit was a response to Governor Zulum’s recent call for support from individuals and organizations. He shared that Deputy Governor Kadafur had convened a meeting of Southern Borno stakeholders, resulting in the establishment of a dedicated account for contributions. As of Tuesday, over N200 million had been raised, which was presented to the state government to aid relief efforts for the displaced.

Presenting the cheque to Governor Zulum, Deputy Governor Kadafur expressed gratitude to all who contributed, noting that their support reflects the strong bond between Southern Borno and the state government.

“We are here on behalf of the people of Southern Borno, accompanied by our traditional rulers, including the Emirs of Biu, Uba, Shani, and Gwoza, to commiserate with you and the flood victims. We pray for the souls of those lost and for the speedy recovery of the injured. We also present this cheque of N200 million to the State Government’s Flood Basket Fund,” Kadafur said.

He further assured the governor that additional donations were expected and would be used to provide relief materials and support the rebuilding process.

In his response, Governor Zulum expressed his deep appreciation for the generous contributions and emphasized the importance of unity in the face of such challenges.

Later, at the Shehu of Borno’s palace, which was also affected by the flood, Deputy Governor Kadafur presented another cheque of N10 million to aid the restoration of the monarch’s property. The Shehu praised the Southern Borno community for their contributions and prayed for blessings on all who assisted.

In a separate visit, business mogul Alhaji Aminu Al Hassan Dantata donated N1.5 billion to the state government to support flood recovery efforts. Additionally, the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, led
