Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon when six newly passed-out police constables sustained serious injuries in a motor accident at Rijiyar Gwangwan Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred around 3:00 p.m. and involved a green Sharon bus with registration number AA 229 DKA, driven by Shehu Bilya of Sabon Gari, Wudil, and a DAF trailer, whose driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Sources revealed that the Sharon bus, heading from Kano town toward Wudil, rammed into the trailer from behind while the latter was attempting a U-turn on the busy road.
Those injured in the incident were identified as PC Abba Nasiru, PC Kamisu Saidu, PC Mohammed, PC Ahmed Rabiu, PC Ahmed Adamu, and W/PC Rafiatu Alkasi (F/No. 075421).
All the victims were promptly rushed to General Hospital, Wudil, where they are currently receiving treatment and are said to be responding well.
Police operatives who visited the scene conducted an on-the-spot assessment, drew a sketch map of the crash site, and commenced investigation to trace the fleeing trailer driver and determine the actual cause of the accident.
The unfortunate incident occurred barely days after the constables completed their police training — a reminder of the dangers that often accompany the call to service and duty.
