The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 71-year-old man over the alleged murder of his wife following a violent domestic dispute in Yola South Local Government Area.
According to reports by Punch Newspaper, the suspect, identified as Danladi Daga, allegedly attacked his 67-year-old wife during an argument that escalated into violence. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was confirmed dead from her injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the suspect was swiftly arrested after neighbours reported the matter to the police.
“The suspect is in our custody, and investigations are ongoing. The case will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” Nguroje stated.
The victim’s body has been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Yola for autopsy, while police continue to investigate the motive behind the fatal altercation.
Rising Domestic Violence in Adamawa
This tragic case has again drawn attention to the increasing rate of domestic violence and family-related killings in Adamawa State.
Reports by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) show that Adamawa ranks among Nigerian states with the highest cases of gender-based and domestic violence. Many incidents go unreported, often due to fear, stigma, or lack of awareness of legal protection.
In recent years, the Adamawa Ministry of Women Affairs and security agencies have intensified campaigns against domestic abuse, urging couples to resolve conflicts peacefully and report early signs of violence.
The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP), now domesticated in Adamawa, criminalizes all forms of domestic abuse, including physical, emotional, and economic violence. Authorities have warned that anyone found guilty will face severe legal consequences.
