Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Kabir Lawal, has passionately appealed to Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, to promptly adjust the official school closing time across the state from 2:00pm to 1:00pm.
The respected scholar made the call during his sermon at the Fatima Shema Housing Estate Central Mosque in Batagarawa Local Government Area during Friday Jumu’ah prayers. According to Sheikh Lawal, the current 2:00pm closing schedule leaves little to no time for students to rest before heading to evening Islamic classes (Islamiyya).
“Bringing the school closing time back to 1:00pm will not only allow children to rest and refresh their minds but also improve their ability to concentrate and retain what they learn in Islamic school,” the Sheikh emphasized before a large congregation of worshippers.
He noted that the dual burden of attending conventional school until late in the afternoon and then proceeding straight to Islamiyya has been mentally and physically draining for many young pupils across the state.
Sheikh Lawal urged the government to prioritize the well-being and spiritual growth of schoolchildren, stressing that their development must be holistic, encompassing both Western and Islamic education in a balanced manner.
The Sheikh also sounded a note of caution against sending children abroad for studies without proper supervision or guardianship, warning of potential cultural and moral dangers.
He called on parents and guardians to invest in quality local education that promotes both academic excellence and religious grounding.
His remarks have already sparked community discussions, with many parents backing the call and urging the Katsina State Ministry of Education to consider the proposed shift.
As the conversation grows louder, all eyes are now on Governor Radda to see if this grassroots appeal will lead to a policy shift in the state’s academic calendar.
