The Shehu of Dikwa, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Ibn Umar Ibrahim El-Kanemi, CON, JP, has pledged the full support of his emirate to ensure the success of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
The monarch gave the assurance on Tuesday when he received a delegation from the Borno State Government, led by the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Alhaji Sugun Mai Mele, on a sensitization visit to his palace.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Mai Mele conveyed the regards of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and stated that the delegation was in Dikwa to kick off a grassroots campaign to encourage voter registration. He emphasized the pivotal role of traditional institutions as custodians of culture and the bridge between the government and the people.
“The traditional rulers are closer to their subjects and are in the best position to mobilize them for civic exercises such as this,” Mai Mele said. He urged all eligible residents, particularly those who have recently turned 18, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to be able to participate in the democratic process.
The commissioner also commended the Shehu for his steadfast leadership and unwavering support for his people.
In his response, the Shehu of Dikwa expressed his gratitude to Governor Zulum for launching the awareness campaign in his domain. He immediately directed his subjects who are of voting age to turn out en masse to register for their PVCs.
Beyond the voter exercise, the royal father commended the state government and security agencies for their relentless efforts in restoring peace and stability to the region, which has facilitated the safe return of thousands of displaced persons to their ancestral homes.
He noted that this has allowed many returnees to resume agricultural activities this farming season. However, he appealed to the state government to intervene in the recurring issue of destruction caused by cattle, urging it to caution herders against allowing their animals to graze on cultivated farmlands before harvest.
