The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has issued a strong call to the Federal Government and Kebbi State authorities to urgently restore security and protect lives following the deadly attack in Shanga Local Government Area.
Speaking through Rev. Father Mathew Kabirat, the Bishop, Bulus Yohanna, described the situation as dire, revealing that about 500 displaced persons—men, women and children—are now in urgent need of food, water, medical care and shelter.
The Diocese disclosed it is currently hosting 491 internally displaced persons at Saint Dominic Catholic Church in Yauri after the Easter Sunday attack on Debe village, where suspected terrorists killed 24 people, injured several others and razed homes, a church, a mosque and shops.
The violence, which also spread to nearby communities including Binniwa and Kalkami, left widespread destruction, with markets and even the emir’s residence burnt.
While commending relief efforts by the Kebbi State Government and Yauri Local Council, the Diocese urged sustained security deployment, rehabilitation of affected communities and broader humanitarian support.
It stressed that victims cut across religious lines, warning that failure to act decisively could worsen the crisis and deepen human suffering.
