In response to growing media reactions, the Borno State Government has clarified that recent remarks made by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum were not intended to discredit the Nigerian Armed Forces but to highlight complex realities in counter-insurgency operations.
During a live interview on the News Central breakfast show, Governor Zulum addressed concerns about the resurgence of attacks in the region and the role of surrendered insurgents. He stated, “I cannot completely say that 100% of those that surrendered are doing the right thing. I want to assure you that over 90% are doing well and are not participating in the ongoing act of terrorism.”
While acknowledging the existence of possible informants or collaborators within various sectors—including the military—the Governor emphasized that such elements are exceptions, not the rule, and are not unique to any one institution.
Governor Zulum used the opportunity to salute the gallantry, commitment, and resilience of Nigeria’s frontline troops, reaffirming his unwavering support for their sacrifices.
It is important to note that the issue of internal compromise within the armed forces is not new. Similar concerns were raised by the Nigerian Army itself in 2016, further validating the Governor’s point.
