A former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), on Monday held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, fueling speculation of an imminent security shake-up in the federal government.
The meeting comes barely 24 hours after the resignation of Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down citing health reasons. His exit has left a major gap in the nation’s security architecture at a time Nigeria faces rising bandit attacks, mass kidnappings and persistent violent crimes in several states.
Although details of the discussions between President Tinubu and General Musa were not disclosed, the visit has generated public interest, with many linking it to the ongoing consultation for a new defence minister. Presidency sources said the president is considering several options as part of a broader restructuring aimed at strengthening the country’s response to insecurity.
General Musa, who served as Chief of Defence Staff until earlier this year, is widely regarded for his experience in counter-terrorism and military operations across the North-East. His visit to Aso Rock has heightened speculation that he may be shortlisted as a possible replacement for the outgoing defence minister.
The presidency is expected to make an official announcement once consultations are concluded.
