A prominent citizen, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to scrap the office of Minister of State for Defence and sack Bello Matawalle, citing concerns over national security and the fight against terrorism and banditry.
In a letter to the President, Shinkafi expressed deep concern over the recent spate of terror attacks in the country, particularly in the Northern region, and questioned Matawalle’s ability to effectively coordinate the Ministry of Defence.
The appointment of General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence was widely welcomed by Nigerians, who see him as a seasoned and experienced leader with the capacity to tackle the country’s security challenges.
However, Shinkafi argued that Matawalle’s continued tenure as Minister of State for Defence is a hindrance to the effective coordination of the Ministry and the fight against terrorism.
Shinkafi cited numerous allegations against reported corruption, mismanagement, and lack of leadership acumen against Matawalle, which have raised concerns about his fitness for the role.
The letter emphasized the need for reform in the Ministry of Defence, citing the current arrangement where the senior minister lacks control over key areas such as the maritime domain, Pension Board, and Defence Industries Corporation.
Shinkafi urged the President to unify the Ministry of Defence under one command, arguing that this would eliminate unnecessary personality clashes and inefficiency.
The letter concluded by calling on President Tinubu to heed the call to scrap the office of Minister of State for Defence and sack Bello Matawalle, citing the need for effective leadership and coordination in addressing the country’s security challenges.
