In a dramatic escalation of battlefield tactics, Russian forces have launched large-scale ground assaults across Ukraine’s southern and eastern fronts, abandoning smaller infantry skirmishes for full-blown offensives involving hundreds of troops and dozens of armored vehicles.
Ukraine’s military reported a significant engagement on Wednesday in the Zaporizhzhia region, where 320 Russian soldiers and 40 armored vehicles mounted a fierce 2.5-hour attack. The offensive was repelled with “considerable enemy losses,” according to Ukrainian officials.
Another major strike was recorded Sunday near Pokrovsk in Donetsk, where platoon-sized Russian formations attempted to breach defensive lines. Ukraine’s National Guard says the attack was thwarted with “resolute resistance.”
Kyiv officials say the shift marks a critical new phase in the war, now in its fourth year, as Moscow intensifies pressure along key frontlines with renewed aggression and firepower.
“Russia is changing gears—what we’re seeing now is not probing, it’s pounding,” a Ukrainian military spokesperson said.
Previously, Russian forces had relied heavily on smaller, agile infantry squads outfitted for anti-drone warfare. The new approach signals a return to traditional ground warfare, raising concerns of further escalation and higher casualties.
