In a powerful fusion of leadership, philanthropy and grassroots transformation, Mai Mala Buni, Governor of Yobe State, on Sunday commissioned a modern Ruga settlement on the outskirts of Nguru, describing the project as a shining example of how private initiative can accelerate community development and complement government efforts.
The Ruga settlement, located about seven kilometres from Nguru town, was single-handedly built by renowned philanthropist Alhaji Balarabe Abdullahi DJ. The project features well-planned housing units, a primary school and a healthcare clinic—facilities designed to restore dignity, stability and opportunity to pastoral and rural families.
Commissioning the project before an enthusiastic crowd of community members, traditional rulers and government officials, Governor Buni did not mince words in praising the vision behind the initiative.
“I must commend and appreciate Alhaji Balarabe DJ on behalf of the good people of this community, Nguru Local Government, Yobe State, and indeed Nigeria at large,” the governor declared. “What we are seeing here is not just infrastructure, but a thoughtful investment in human development.”
He noted that the settlement represents a development model that goes beyond charity to create lasting social impact. “The school, the clinic and the housing provided here have a transformative multiplier effect. This is highly commendable and worthy of emulation,” he added.
As the governor toured the facilities, the story of the Ruga settlement unfolded in bricks and mortar. Classrooms prepared to keep children in school, a clinic positioned to deliver timely healthcare, and decent housing that offers families a sense of belonging—all combined to tell a compelling story of inclusive development.
Governor Buni described the project as proof that community-driven initiatives can succeed when they are rooted in genuine concern for people’s welfare. According to him, Alhaji Balarabe DJ’s approach demonstrates how individuals can play a decisive role in addressing social gaps while supporting government programmes.
“This is the kind of leadership that strengthens communities and stabilises livelihoods,” the governor said. “When development is people-centred, its impact endures.”
From Nguru, Governor Buni moved on to Machina, where he commissioned a sesame seed processing factory established by the state government—another milestone in Yobe’s push for economic diversification and value addition.
Visibly impressed by the facility, the governor described it as a symbol of prudent resource utilisation and purposeful governance.
“I am highly delighted to be here. The structure is impressive, and what we are witnessing represents a true battle for the efficient use of our resources,” he said. “This investment is justified by its clear objective—empowering farmers, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.”
He urged residents to take full ownership of the factory, stressing that its success depends on community engagement. “I call on the people to make optimal use of this facility for the benefit of their community and the state at large,” he said.
Governor Buni further described the factory as one of several development “forts” established across Yobe State, now being commissioned as part of his administration’s broader development drive.
Beyond commissioning projects, the governor used the occasion to issue a strong appeal to politicians, public office holders and wealthy individuals across the state.
“I, therefore, call on other public-spirited individuals to emulate this noble example and complement the efforts of the government,” he said, referring pointedly to Alhaji Balarabe DJ’s intervention.
He emphasised that government alone cannot carry the full burden of development, particularly in areas such as housing, healthcare, education and rural enterprise. According to him, sustained progress requires strong partnerships between the public sector and private citizens with a passion for service.
Community leaders in Nguru hailed the Ruga settlement as a game-changer, noting that it has brought essential services closer to families who previously lived on the margins. They praised Alhaji Balarabe DJ for investing directly in the people and choosing projects that address real needs.
Residents expressed optimism that the settlement would enhance social stability, improve access to education and healthcare, and create a more secure environment for families.
Taken together, the commissioning of the Ruga settlement and the sesame seed processing factory painted a clear picture of Yobe State’s development trajectory—one driven by collaboration, accountability and people-focused investments.
For Governor Buni, the events underscored his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and prudent governance.
