RECORD OR GLORY? OSIMHEN SHRUGS YEKINI MARK, SETS SIGHTS ON SILVERWARE

Borno State Government

Three goals away from history, Victor Osimhen is within touching distance of eclipsing the long-standing scoring record of late Nigerian legend Rashidi Yekini. But as the numbers tighten and the spotlight intensifies, the Super Eagles’ talisman insists the chase is not about personal glory.

The Super Eagles striker, who currently plies his trade with Turkish giants Galatasaray, played down the significance of the milestone, offering a rare show of humility in an era obsessed with records.

“Not at all,” Osimhen said when asked if becoming Nigeria’s all-time top scorer mattered to him. “It doesn’t matter if I equal the record or surpass it. Yekini is the best striker Nigeria has ever produced. I just want to win something for my country and I am happy that with my team-mates, I’m on that path.”

Yekini’s record has stood as a towering benchmark in Nigerian football for decades, a symbol of ruthless finishing and national pride. Yet, for Osimhen, the true legacy lies not in numbers, but in trophies, teamwork and the roar of a nation united by victory.

As goals beckon and history whispers, Osimhen’s message is clear: records may fall, but country comes first.
