Defying heavy rain and rising political tension, top figures of the African Democratic Congress on Wednesday stormed the streets of Abuja in a dramatic protest over what they described as an “undemocratic purge” within the party.
Leading the charge were political heavyweights including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Peter Obi, alongside other prominent figures such as Dino Melaye and Rotimi Amaechi.
The protest, which drew over 1,000 party faithful, was sparked by the controversial removal of David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary from the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Waving placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators accused authorities of political interference, with inscriptions such as “Tinubu, give peace a chance” and “INEC Chairman must resign” dominating the protest scene.
Despite the downpour, the protesters marched in high spirits toward the INEC National Headquarters, vowing not to back down until what they termed “injustice” is reversed.
Observers say the unusual alliance of political heavyweights within the ADC signals a growing resistance bloc, raising stakes ahead of the 2027 elections and deepening concerns over internal party stability and electoral integrity.
As the march continues, attention is now fixed on INEC’s response—and whether the unfolding protest could ignite a wider political confrontation in the nation’s capital.
