Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has approved the establishment of KASSAROTA Volunteer Community Marshals, a new initiative aimed at strengthening road safety and reducing traffic crashes across the state.
The approval, announced in a statement issued to journalists in Katsina by the Public Relations Officer of the Katsina State Safety and Road Traffic Authority (KASSAROTA), Abubakar Marwana Kofar Sauri, said the programme will recruit 3,610 volunteers to serve in communities across the state.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to encourage community participation in promoting safer road use and preventing traffic accidents, which have become a growing concern.
The Volunteer Community Marshals are expected to provide selfless humanitarian service, supporting government efforts to reduce road crashes and promote orderliness within the transport system.
Their responsibilities will include traffic control during peak periods and special events, emergency response during accidents, public enlightenment on traffic regulations, and general road safety advocacy.
The volunteers will also assist vulnerable road users such as injured persons, children, and school pupils, helping them navigate busy roads safely.
Authorities noted that statistics show the number of people killed or injured in road traffic crashes in Katsina State is in some cases comparable to casualties recorded from banditry-related attacks, largely due to reckless driving, one-way violations, overloading, excessive speeding, and unsafe road use.
The government believes the creation of the volunteer marshal unit will help curb these trends through intensified public awareness and improved traffic management.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s approval is seen as a major step toward repositioning Katsina State Safety and Road Traffic Authority to more effectively safeguard lives and property through proactive road safety measures.
Officials stressed that the Volunteer Community Marshals will strictly perform humanitarian duties, focusing on accident response, traffic support, and assistance to road users across the state.
