The President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, His Excellency Umarou Sissoco Embaló, has conferred the Gold Medal of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the nation’s highest honour, on Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, in recognition of his contributions to African unity, education, and empowerment.
According to a statement by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the medal was presented on behalf of President Embaló by the Guinea-Bissau Minister of Defence, Mr. Donisio Cabi, during a ceremony held at the Government House, Kano.
Speaking during the 33rd Executive Council meeting, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to President Embaló and the people of Guinea-Bissau, describing the award as “a call to deepen educational cooperation and strengthen African solidarity as instruments for peace and shared prosperity.”
Mr. Cabi lauded the Kano Governor’s visionary Pan-African leadership, highlighting his gesture of offering 50 scholarship slots to young students from Guinea-Bissau as “a lifeline and beacon of hope” for the youth of his country.
He added that the initiative reflects the Kwankwasiyya philosophy of empowerment, justice, and collective progress, noting that Governor Yusuf’s decision to invest in the human capital of another African nation embodies “true statesmanship and continental unity.”
Recalling Kano’s historic role as a hub of trade, learning, and culture linking West Africa through the Sahara and Sahel, Mr. Cabi said the scholarship programme symbolizes “a bridge of knowledge and opportunity” that strengthens ties between Kano and Guinea-Bissau.
The event, witnessed by members of the Kano State Executive Council and other dignitaries, marks a new era of diplomatic and cultural partnership between both regions — celebrating Governor Yusuf as a leading voice of Pan-African unity through education and empowerment.
