Uyo, Akwa Ibom — Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have dismantled a notorious fraud syndicate terrorising residents of Uyo, rescuing an 81-year-old pensioner and recovering the gang’s operational tricycle in a swift intelligence-led operation.
The breakthrough came on Monday, February 3, 2026, around 3:30 p.m., after credible information from a vigilant citizen exposed the activities of a group locally dubbed “Utotoh,” accused of luring unsuspecting victims with a tricycle before defrauding them of cash and valuables.
Police swooped on the suspects, arresting Otoabasi Ekpeyong (51), Ubong Sylvanus (42) and Sunday Akpan (60). During the operation, officers safely rescued Friday, an 81-year-old pensioner, unharmed from the gang’s grip.
Also recovered was the syndicate’s tricycle, bearing registration number UFG-886-QA, reportedly without a motor number. The suspects allegedly confessed to defrauding multiple victims across Uyo and neighbouring areas.
Police authorities say investigations are ongoing to trace additional victims, obtain statements and apprehend other members of the network.
