The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its anti-cultism drive with the arrest of two suspected members of the Black Axe Confraternity in Uyo.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., during an intelligence-led operation following credible information that suspected cultists were carrying out initiation activities at a secondary school along Oron Road.
Police sources said the suspects fled on sighting patrol teams, abandoning a red mini-bus with registration number NYA-164XA. A hot pursuit ensued, leading to the arrest of Anitie Isaac and Unyime Effiong, both males.
Items recovered at the scene included one axe, a brown calabash, a bottle of Lord’s alcoholic drink, assorted incense, coloured handkerchiefs, and a Neo Black Axe (Neo Lord’s Movement of Africa) sticker, all believed to be linked to cult activities.
The suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody as investigations continue. The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for cultism and related crimes, assuring residents that sustained operations will continue to rid Akwa Ibom State of criminal elements.
