Uyo, Akwa Ibom – In a dramatic late evening operation, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command rescued 20 Ghanaian nationals who had been trafficked into the state and kept in captivity.
The rescue, carried out on Monday, August 18, 2025, followed a coordinated effort between the Nigerian Police, the Ghana Police Service, and INTERPOL. Acting on credible intelligence, operatives stormed a heavily fenced compound in Obio Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area, where the victims were being held.
According to police sources, the operation was launched at about 4:17 p.m., leading to the rescue of 10 men and 10 women, all confirmed to be Ghanaian citizens.
DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, disclosed that the victims appeared disoriented and unable to provide coherent information. Investigators suspect they may have been subjected to hypnosis by their traffickers.
“This rescue underscores the Command’s commitment to fighting human trafficking in partnership with international security agencies,” DSP John stated, adding that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the syndicate behind the crime.
The rescued individuals are currently receiving care while police intensify efforts to trace and dismantle the trafficking network. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
