The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has debunked reports circulating in sections of the media alleging that armed men raided a students’ lodge in Ikot Ekpene, abducted 15 students, and carted away valuables.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Command described the reports as “misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic,” clarifying that the incident was in fact a lawful operation conducted by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Office.
According to the Command, the police received a distress call around 4:30 a.m. on October 24, 2025, about a suspected armed robbery at Ikot Uboh Village, Ikot Ekpene. Responding swiftly, tactical units were deployed to the area. Upon arrival, the officers discovered that the operatives on ground were from the EFCC, who were carrying out an officially sanctioned operation — not an abduction as earlier reported.
“No student was abducted. The EFCC arrested some suspects in line with their ongoing investigation,” the statement clarified.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, commended the officers for their professionalism and restraint, noting that their conduct helped avert a potential confrontation. He also emphasized the need for inter-agency coordination, urging all security bodies to liaise with the Police when operating within the state to avoid confusion.
While reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Command urged journalists to verify sensitive security information with the police before publication.
“The media plays a vital role in society, but accuracy and professionalism must be upheld to maintain public trust and avoid unnecessary tension,” DSP John stated.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command assured residents that the state remains safe, and its doors are open for clarification on any security-related issues.
