The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has struck a major blow against kidnapping syndicates terrorizing Eket, with the arrest of two more suspects linked to a botched abduction.
In a joint intelligence-led operation carried out around 1:00AM on August 22, operatives apprehended Victor Bassey Tom, popularly known by his aliases “Igbo Man” and “Mami”, and Nelson Samuel, a boat operator who ferried kidnappers and their victims to the creeks.
Tom, fingered by an earlier arrested gang member as the mastermind of the foiled operation, confessed to being part of the group behind the abduction of two top businessmen in Eket. Police say he has also been linked to several other kidnappings in the area.
Both suspects are now in custody as investigators intensify efforts to track down other accomplices named during interrogation.
Reaffirming the Command’s determination to rid the state of violent crime, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, assured residents that officers will “continue to work tirelessly to dismantle criminal networks” and ensure Akwa Ibom remains safe.
