Eket, Akwa Ibom – Swift response by operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command averted a kidnap attempt in Eket on Saturday night, August 16, 2025, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a cache of arms.
The drama unfolded around 9:15 PM when the Command received a distress call from a resident on Factory Road, Afia Nsit, Eket. Four suspected kidnappers had reportedly tried to force their way into a man’s vehicle as he drove into his home.
The victim, whose identity is withheld for security reasons, said the suspects attempted to overpower him but fled when operatives stormed the scene.
A hot chase ensued, resulting in the arrest of Okon Edem Okon of Oyoku, Urue-Offong/Oruko LGA, and Emmanuel Bassey of Udung-Uko LGA. Two other suspects are still on the run.
In a follow-up operation, police combed a nearby bush and discovered an uncompleted building used as a hideout. A sack bag loaded with dangerous weapons and items was recovered, including:
- One AK-47 rifle with 15 rounds of ammunition and three magazines
- One assault rifle with 52 rounds of ammunition and three magazines
- One pump-action shotgun with six live cartridges
- A Redmi 14C phone
- A head warmer, charms, and black rubber sandals
Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident, assuring residents that manhunt operations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
“The swift action of our operatives saved a life and prevented another abduction case in Eket. We are determined to rid Akwa Ibom of criminal elements,” she stated.
The foiled kidnap attempt comes amid renewed efforts by the command to clamp down on violent crimes across the state.
