Police Foil Highway Ambush, Rescue Six Abducted Victims on Yankara–Funtua Road

Borno State Government

Swift police action in Katsina State has foiled a midnight bandit ambush on the Yankara–Funtua highway, leading to the dramatic rescue of six kidnapped passengers in Faskari Local Government Area.

Security sources said the incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on January 24, when armed bandits blocked the highway and abducted six occupants of a green Honda Civic with registration number AAA 518 BC, traveling from Funtua to Faskari.

Luck ran out for the kidnappers moments later as a patrol team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Faskari, on routine night surveillance, stumbled upon the scene. The officers immediately engaged the hoodlums in a fierce tactical gun duel.

Outgunned, the bandits abandoned their captives and fled into the surrounding bush under the cover of darkness.

The victims—Rabi Hamisu, Safare Musa, Abubakar Samaila, Shehu Umar, Sara’u Yahaya, and Ibrahim Babangida—were rescued unharmed and safely reunited with their families.

Police authorities said intensive patrols have been intensified along the Yankara–Funtua axis and adjoining routes, while a manhunt is underway to track down the fleeing suspects.

The operation underscores the resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to deny criminal gangs freedom of action on Katsina’s highways and reinforce public confidence in night-time road travel.
