The Nigeria Police Force has sounded the alarm over glaring irregularities and alleged corruption in the 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise.
The list of successful candidates, recently published on the Police Service Commission (PSC) portal, has sparked outrage as complaints of non-applicants and failed candidates making the cut pour in.
Upon review, the police found several disturbing issues:Non-applicants’ names appear as successful candidates.Candidates who failed the Computer Based Test (CBT) or physical screening are listed.
Medically unfit candidates, disqualified at the final stage, are also named.
Most troubling are allegations of financial dealings and corrupt practices influencing the selection of unqualified individuals.
The Inspector General of Police, in a letter dated June 10, 2024, has objected to the list, emphasizing the need for qualified recruits to ensure the police’s effectiveness.
The police have dissociated from the published list, calling for a transparent and credible review of the recruitment process.
Despite the Supreme Court ruling affirming PSC’s recruitment powers, the police stress the necessity of recruiting competent and trainable personnel to avoid future inefficiencies.
The leadership of the PSC had earlier set up a Joint Recruitment Board, headed by a PSC Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Training and Development.
However, the board was reportedly sidelined, and its mandate was unfulfilled, leading to the current debacle.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to addressing the concerns of prospective recruits and ensuring a rigorous, fair, and successful recruitment process in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for police reform.
