Fear gripped Zurak community in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday afternoon after suspected bandits launched a deadly ambush on a joint security team under Operation Enduring Peace, leaving two personnel dead and two others missing.
Security sources said the attack occurred on February 3 at about 1:00 p.m. while the team was on routine duty in the area. The assailants, said to be heavily armed, reportedly opened fire on the operatives, killing a police inspector and a soldier on the spot before fleeing with their service rifles.
Those killed were identified as Inspector Igba Terseer (AP/No. 302410) of the 66 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Shendam, and a soldier attached to Operation Enduring Peace. Two other soldiers are still unaccounted for as at press time.
“The attackers struck swiftly, overwhelmed the team and escaped with their rifles. Two soldiers remain missing,” a source disclosed.
Following the incident, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bashar swiftly mobilised a joint response team, working in collaboration with other security agencies, and moved to the scene.
Security authorities said intensive search-and-rescue operations are ongoing to locate the missing personnel, track down the attackers, and recover the stolen firearms, as calm is being gradually restored in the affected community.
The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of Plateau State, despite sustained joint operations aimed at restoring peace in troubled rural areas.
