In a bid to strengthen peace and security across border communities, Search for Common Ground, an international peacebuilding NGO, has kickstarted a strategic training program for journalists and security operatives in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
The initiative, targeting Nigeria-Benin border regions, brings together participants from five frontline states – Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Kwara, and Niger – for a week-long engagement at Azbir Hotel and Rayhaan University.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, applauded the initiative, describing it as “timely and vital.” He commended Governor Nasir Idris for taking decisive steps to tackle insecurity, especially in the southern part of the state, where banditry once crippled farming activities.
The Commissioner noted that collaborative security measures introduced under Governor Idris’ leadership have brought relative peace, enabling a bumper harvest last season. He expressed optimism that the upcoming rainy season would yield similar results.
He urged greater synergy between security forces and civilians, not only at the borders but across Kebbi State. Welcoming the trainees from other states, he also invited them to witness first-hand the major infrastructural strides recorded under Governor Idris within just two years.
The training continues through the week and is expected to wrap up on Thursday.
