PDP Rejects Emergency Rule in Rivers, Says Tinubu Lacks Power to Suspend Governor

Katsina state government

Abuja— The Peoples Democratic Party PDP has strongly rejected the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of violating the 1999 Constitution and attempting to impose an unelected leader on the state.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described the President’s action as an illegal power grab, warning that it undermines democracy and the will of Rivers people who elected Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The party condemned the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd.) to govern Rivers State, calling it a clear attack on democracy. It further alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been orchestrating crises to forcefully take over Rivers State, using the emergency rule as a pretext.

Citing Section 305 of the Constitution, the PDP argued that Tinubu lacks unilateral authority to impose emergency rule without National Assembly approval. The party also warned that this move could create further instability, not just in Rivers State, but across Nigeria.

The PDP cautioned Vice Admiral Ibas against assuming office, insisting that Nigeria remains a democracy, not a military regime where governors are installed by decree.

As the political tension escalates, all eyes are now on the National Assembly and key stakeholders to determine the fate of democracy in Rivers State.
