The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has launched the distribution of relief materials to more than 3,000 households affected by recent flash floods in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The intervention targets communities hit by the floods which occurred two weeks ago, displacing thousands of residents. According to the Borno State Coordinator of the NEDC, Muhammad Wasada, a total of 3,200 households were captured after a thorough needs assessment. He noted that beneficiary details, including names and telephone numbers, were recorded to ensure transparency and accountability.
The relief package being distributed includes a 25kg bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti, five litres of vegetable oil, packets of instant noodles, 10kg of sugar, as well as blankets and sleeping mats.
While this phase focuses on flood-affected households in Borno, the NEDC also recently carried out similar interventions in Adamawa and Bauchi States, including Dass Local Government Area. The Commission routinely supports vulnerable populations in times of emergency and during festive periods.
Several beneficiaries thanked the Commission for the timely assistance, while others highlighted blocked drainage systems and indiscriminate dumping of refuse as major causes of the flooding. Many households have been forced to relocate temporarily to public facilities such as schools.
