The looming nationwide fuel crisis has been averted as the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Monday called off its strike following a truce brokered by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The breakthrough came after a marathon meeting in Abuja involving top government officials, labour leaders, and representatives of the Dangote Refinery.
In attendance were Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi; Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; alongside Alhaji Sayyu Dantata who led the Dangote Refinery delegation.
Labour was represented by Mr. Akpouha Williams (NUPENG), Mr. Benson Upah (NLC), and Dr. N.A. Toto, mni+ (TUC).
After hours of heated deliberations, parties reached a consensus to uphold labour laws guaranteeing workers the freedom to choose whether or not to join a union. Other contentious issues were also ironed out, leading to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The resolution prompted NUPENG to immediately suspend its industrial action, which had threatened petroleum supply and nationwide distribution.
Government officials described the agreement as a milestone for industrial harmony, while labour leaders pledged to continue defending workers’ rights within the ambit of the law.
