Zamfara Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) seek partnership with lawmaker representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency, Alhaji Abdulmalik Zubairu to train students of Mass Communication on fake news.
The Council Chairman Ibrahim Maizare solicited for the partnership during a courtesy visit with Chairman Lawmaker Committee on Education, Adamu Muhammed which held in Gusau on Tuesday.
Maizare said the growing of social media handlers among youths is taking new dimension that raises concern among state actors.
The proliferation of fake news and misinformation occasioned by the influence of social media had become a significant concern, making it critical for the Union and other stakeholders to develop mechanism of combating false information.
He said with the prevailing insecurity in Zamfara, students of mass communication need to be well equipped with media literary skills and practical knowledge of Journalism to contribute in the restoration of peace and harmony to the state.
The students also need to be exposed to the career opportunities in journalism for self reliance and overall economic growth and development.
Maizare added that on this background the Zamfara Council of NUJ deemed it necessary to contribute its quota towards creating peaceful society through empowering the upcoming journalists with the skills to identity and combat fake news and digital gender based violence.
Responding to the visit the Chairman Lawmaker Committee on Education, Adamu Muhammed expressed happiness with the visit, believing that there is wisdom behind the initiative.
Muhammed said the idea coincided with the lawmaker vision and mission because all his dream to see that the society become well informed and youths were empowered.
According to him the Lawmaker, Abdulmalik Zubairu is passionate about education so no doubt he would give your request kind consideration.
