The Borno State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has applauded the University of Maiduguri for conferring the prestigious Emeritus status on three of its most distinguished academics — Professors Shettima Umara Bulakarema, Bukar Bababe, and Hurana Dlakwa.
In a warm and celebratory statement issued in Maiduguri, NUJ Council Chairman, Comrade Abdulkareem Haruna, hailed the recognition as a “fitting tribute” to decades of exceptional scholarship, leadership, and service. He noted that the honour reflects the professors’ immense impact on academia and society.
“This distinguished honour is a testament to a lifetime of scholarly excellence and dedicated service,” the NUJ said, describing the trio as intellectual giants whose work has elevated UNIMAID’s reputation and inspired generations — including many journalists within the union.
The council highlighted that Emeritus status is reserved for scholars whose careers have been marked by groundbreaking research, passionate teaching, and transformative mentorship. Their contributions, it noted, have helped shape the intellectual and societal growth of both Borno State and Nigeria.
Praising the professors as enduring beacons of academic excellence, the NUJ wished them continued good health and fulfilment as they enter a new chapter of service and legacy-building.
As the foremost professional body representing journalists across Borno State, the NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical journalism, defending media practitioners, and advancing the state’s development.
