The Nigerian media space is set to witness a spectacular convergence of political power, journalistic prestige, and national reflection as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leads an array of dignitaries to declare open the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on June 21, 2025, at the iconic Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.
With the theme “Celebrating Seven Decades of Journalistic Excellence,” the milestone event promises to be more than a celebration—it will be a moment of national reckoning, unity, and a reaffirmation of the sacred duty of the press.
President Tinubu will not only serve as the Special Guest of Honour but will also be invested as the Grand Patron of the NUJ, cementing his place in the annals of press freedom in Nigeria.
Also billed to grace the landmark occasion are Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, both expected to set the tone for the celebration with keynote addresses on the enduring role of the media in nation-building.
The event will also witness the presence of the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi, as Chief Host, alongside media stalwarts like veteran journalist and former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba as Father of the Day, and Channels Media Group Chairman, Dr. John Momoh, who will chair the occasion.
The celebration will include special honours for public figures and professionals—serving and past—who have significantly contributed to the growth and protection of journalism in Nigeria.
One of the standout features of the event will be the unveiling of a powerful new publication, “Bleeding PEN”, authored by former NUJ National Secretary, Comrade Shaibu Leman. The book captures the dangers, resilience, and courage of Nigerian journalists across seven challenging decades.
Chairman of the NUJ@70 Organising Committee, Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde, emphasized that this platinum jubilee is more than a nostalgic celebration. “It is a clarion call to recommit ourselves to the ideals of responsible journalism, national unity, press freedom, and democratic accountability,” he said.
From press pens to power podiums, the NUJ@70 is poised to remind the nation—and the world—why journalism remains the lifeblood of democracy.
