A major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping was recorded on Sunday as police operatives apprehended Wasiu Oloyede, a notorious kidnap kingpin, at Odo Pako area of Ota in Ogun State.
Oloyede, the suspected leader of a deadly gang, was behind the recent abduction of a soldier in Alagbado, Lagos, on Friday. The gang stripped the victim of his military uniform, identity card, ATM cards, and mobile phone. Though the soldier later escaped from captivity, the criminals had already begun plotting their next move — with deadly intent.
According to police sources, Oloyede attempted to wear the stolen uniform in a desperate bid to impersonate a military officer. His target: a local vigilante member, whom he tried to deceive and disarm by snatching his dane gun.
But the disguise failed. The vigilant community security operative raised an alarm, leading to the suspect’s swift arrest by law enforcement authorities.
“The suspect thought wearing a soldier’s uniform would make his next attack easier,” a police officer involved in the arrest said. “But he was outsmarted and arrested before he could strike again.”
Oloyede is currently in police custody as investigations continue into his gang’s wider network and criminal operations across Lagos and Ogun States.
Security experts say the arrest is a significant blow to kidnapping rings operating along the Lagos-Ogun corridor. Residents have applauded the prompt police response and called for maximum prosecution to deter future crimes.
Meanwhile, authorities have vowed to track down the rest of Oloyede’s accomplices still at large.
