The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has issued an urgent plea for calm following the escalation of protests in Zamfara State, which have turned violent after initially peaceful demonstrations.

CNG, monitoring protests across the northern states since August 1, highlights the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but condemns the recent surge in violence that has resulted in injuries, deaths, and widespread destruction of property.

Escalation in Violence
Originally peaceful, the protests in Zamfara have been infiltrated by criminal elements, leading to chaos, particularly on August 5.

The CNG reports that underage individuals were manipulated to incite violence, causing severe injuries, shutting down businesses, and devastating public and private properties.

Call for Restraint and Dialogue
Recognizing Zamfara’s historical resilience, the CNG warns that continued violence threatens the fragile peace and stability of the state.

They urge all parties to engage in peaceful dialogue and restraint to prevent further escalation and ensure long-term stability.

Infiltration of Foreign Agents
The CNG has also raised concerns about foreign influence, noting that some protesters were seen flying foreign flags and calling for external intervention in Nigeria’s governance.

This, the CNG argues, undermines national sovereignty and distorts the objectives of the protests.

Economic Hardships and Government Responsibility
Addressing the underlying causes of the protests, the CNG acknowledges the severe economic challenges exacerbated by the removal of subsidies, inflation, and insecurity.

They call on both federal and state governments to review economic policies, enhance security efforts, and improve access to education and poverty alleviation programs.

A Call to Action for Peace
The CNG concludes with a call for unity and peaceful resolution, urging all stakeholders to prioritize patriotism and the rule of law.

They emphasize that only through collective effort and constructive dialogue can Zamfara overcome its challenges and build a brighter future.
