In a surprising turn of events, nearly one-quarter of the 10th National Assembly’s senators have yet to introduce a single bill in their inaugural year.
As the Senate approaches its one-year milestone on June 13, it has been revealed that 24 out of 109 senators have not sponsored any legislation, leaving constituents questioning their legislative engagement.
Despite the sluggish start for some, the remaining 85 senators have been active, collectively introducing 279 bills between July 2023 and March 2024.
Notably, nine of the 13 ex-governors in the Senate have made significant contributions, including Orji Uzor Kalu with five bills and Senate President Godswill Akpabio with two.
Conversely, ex-governors Adams Oshiomhole, Henry Seriake Dickson, Simon Lalong, and Abdulaziz Yari are among those who have yet to propose any bills.
The inactive 24 senators span a diverse array of regions and parties, raising concerns about their commitment to legislative duties.
Standing out in productivity, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele leads with a record 23 bills, followed by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin with 17.
This disparity in legislative activity highlights the contrasting levels of engagement within the Senate, sparking a debate on the effectiveness of its members in addressing national issues.
