In a dramatic turn at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, Abuja, Justice Maryanne Anenih dismissed the oral bail applications of Abdulsalam Hudu and Umar Oricho, co-defendants of former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, in a N110.4 billion fraud case.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned them on October 3, 2024, as part of a high-profile fraud trial.
While defence lawyers argued for their clients’ release from EFCC custody, the prosecution, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, opposed the move, stressing that bail applications must be formal.
Justice Anenih sided with the prosecution, stating, “You must come formally,” and emphasized the need to follow legal procedures.
Meanwhile, the court learned that the EFCC had complied with its order to publish a public summons against Yahaya Bello, who has continuously avoided court appearances.
Bello faces fresh 16-count charges, but the case has been adjourned until November 14 and 20, 2024, for his arraignment.
