NMDPRA Assures Adequate Fuel Supply, Warns Against Panic Buying

Borno State Government

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reassured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm over the availability of petroleum products across the country, urging citizens to resist the temptation of panic buying or hoarding.

In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, George Ene-Ita, the Authority emphasized that there is “adequate supply of petroleum products within the acceptable national sufficiency threshold” to meet the nation’s energy demands during the current peak period.

According to the NMDPRA, domestic supply remains robust with sufficient volumes of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sourced from both local refineries and importation. These, it said, are being strategically replenished at storage depots and retail outlets nationwide.

The Authority further clarified that the implementation of the 15% ad-valorem import duty on imported PMS and diesel “is no longer in view”, noting that this decision aligns with efforts to stabilize the downstream sector and sustain affordability for consumers.

While cautioning marketers against hoarding or creating artificial scarcity, the NMDPRA vowed to “closely monitor the supply situation and take appropriate regulatory measures to prevent any disruption in the distribution of petroleum products across the country.”

The statement also commended stakeholders in the midstream and downstream value chain for their continued cooperation in maintaining an uninterrupted supply chain, assuring the public of the Authority’s unwavering commitment to guaranteeing national energy security.

“We urge Nigerians to avoid panic buying and trust in the mechanisms put in place to ensure continuous and sufficient supply across all regions,” the Authority stated.

With this assurance, the NMDPRA seeks to calm public anxiety amid rising demand, reaffirming that fuel queues or scarcity fears are unnecessary at this time.
