As schools across Nigeria reopen, students are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) as a trusted study companion, according to fresh Google Search trend data released on Tuesday.
The report revealed a staggering 200 percent increase in searches combining “AI + studying” compared to 2024, underscoring a growing shift among learners who are now integrating AI tools into their academic journey.
Google noted that the surge goes beyond curiosity—students are actively seeking out AI-based tutors, free learning tools, and smart prompts to help them tackle difficult subjects.
Subject-specific queries reflect this trend: searches for “AI + chemistry” spiked by 50 percent, while “AI + maths” and “AI + languages” both rose by 30 percent. Interest in grammar also climbed by 20 percent.
Among the most common questions typed into Google were: “Which AI is the most effective for tackling mathematical challenges?” and “How can AI be used to address math problems?”
Speaking on the trend, Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, explained that Nigerian students are embracing AI not just to find quick answers but to gain deeper understanding of complex topics.
> “Learners are leveraging AI to improve comprehension in challenging subjects like chemistry and mathematics. At Google, we remain committed to providing the resources that will enable students to learn, grow, and succeed,” Balogun said.
The tech giant also highlighted that students’ curiosity about AI extends far beyond the classroom. Searches such as “how to use AI” and “what does AI stand for” jumped by 80 percent, while inquiries like “who is considered the father of AI” rose by 70 percent.
With this shift, experts believe AI is no longer just a buzzword for Nigerian students but a transformational tool reshaping the way they study and learn in the digital age.
