The Nigerian Air Force has destroyed a major bandit camp in Zamfara State, killing a significant number of armed criminals and recovering weapons and motorcycles. The operation was carried out as part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, aimed at dismantling the strongholds of bandits and reducing violent attacks in the Kebbi–Zamfara axis.
Military officials said the bandits were moving in a large convoy on over 150 motorcycles through Maru Local Government Area when the air force identified their location and carried out a precise airstrike. After the strike, ground troops were deployed to secure the area and recover equipment left by the bandits. The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the operation successfully neutralised several bandits and destroyed parts of the camp used for planning criminal activities.
The operation comes amid a series of air campaigns by the Nigerian military across the northwest to curb banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling, which have plagued communities in Zamfara and neighbouring states. Security analysts said the strike will disrupt the bandits’ mobility and weaken their ability to launch further attacks.
Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have called for investigations to ensure no civilians were harmed during the airstrike. The Nigerian Air Force, however, denied reports of civilian casualties and said the operation targeted only armed criminals.
The military stated that similar coordinated air and ground operations will continue until bandit activities in the region are significantly reduced and communities can enjoy peace and stability. Local residents have welcomed the operation, saying they hope it will make the area safer and reduce attacks on villages and farmlands.
