Renowned activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has once again stirred national debate after declaring that Nigeria’s male presidents have failed to deliver meaningful progress, insisting it is time for a woman to lead the country.
Yesufu, known for her fearless advocacy for good governance and social justice, lamented that successive male-led administrations have left Nigerians poorer, insecure, and disillusioned.
“Every president we’ve had has been a man, and look where that has gotten us,” she said. “It’s time we give women a chance to show true leadership rooted in empathy, accountability, and results.”
Her statement has reignited discussions about gender equity and representation in Nigerian politics, with many agreeing that women have long been sidelined despite their proven competence in various sectors.
The activist further called for the dismantling of social and political structures that hinder women’s progress, arguing that token appointments and symbolic gestures are not enough.
“Yesufu’s call reflects growing frustration with Nigeria’s political status quo,” said political analyst Ada Kate Uchegbu, who recently declared her intention to contest for president in 2027. “The country needs fresh ideas and balanced leadership, and that means giving women a fair shot.”
Observers note that as the 2027 general elections draw nearer, voices like Yesufu’s may inspire more women to challenge Nigeria’s male-dominated political system and redefine leadership for the next generation.
