In a bold move to stimulate the construction sector and make housing more affordable, the Nigerien government has announced a 35% reduction in cement prices while prohibiting its export to prioritize local demand.
Under the new pricing structure, a ton of cement now sells between 51,000 and 59,000 CFA francs, depending on the region, while a 50kg bag costs 2,750 CFA francs in Niamey.
Authorities say the decision will not only ease construction costs but also encourage housing development nationwide. Meanwhile, new cement factories are underway to ramp up production and sustain local supply.
Officials reaffirmed that the policy is part of the government’s broader plan to “facilitate access to decent housing for all citizens.”
