The leader of Niger’s Patriotic Movement for Freedom and Justice MPLJ, Moussa Kounaï, has issued a chilling threat against the ruling Tiani-led government, warning of imminent strikes aimed at crippling the nation’s vital oil infrastructure.
Speaking from a desert hideout in northern Niger on Saturday, April 26, Kounaï accused what he called the “Tiani cartel” of betraying the people’s trust, vowing that the country’s oil fields and pipelines would soon become battlegrounds.
“Our fight is for freedom and justice,” Kounaï declared. “The exploitation of Niger’s resources by an illegitimate regime must end.”
Though Kounaï provided no specific timeline or targets, he stressed that strategic oil facilities were now “legitimate targets” in what he described as a new phase of rebellion.
Security experts are warning that any disruption to Niger’s oil exports could deliver a major blow to an economy already teetering under political uncertainty.
The Tiani government has yet to officially respond, but reports from the Agadem region suggest military patrols have been beefed up around key installations amid rising fears of sabotage.
