…. Calls for Justice and Stronger Protections

The National Human Rights Commission NHRC has strongly condemned the recent brutal killing of 16 traveling hunters in Edo State, who were mistakenly accused of being kidnappers.
In a statement, NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, described the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice and the urgent need for stronger law enforcement and human rights protection.
“We commend Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for swiftly suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), and banning unauthorized vigilante groups. However, more decisive action is needed to prevent such tragedies,” he said.
Dr. Ojukwu reiterated that every Nigerian has the fundamental right to life, as enshrined in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution, Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. He also highlighted that the freedom of movement, guaranteed under both Nigerian and international laws, was grossly violated in this incident.
The NHRC called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings, stressing that jungle justice has no place in a civilized society.
“All perpetrators must be brought to justice. We urge the government to take concrete measures to prevent future occurrences. There is no justification for mob violence anywhere in the world,” Dr. Ojukwu said.
He emphasized that the Commission remains committed to advocating for human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria. He urged the Edo State Government to ensure a thorough investigation and hold all offenders accountable.
“Protecting human rights is essential to national development. We must all embrace a culture of respect for human dignity and fundamental freedoms to build a better Nigeria,” he concluded.
