New Sheriff in Zone 14: AIG Umar Shehu Nadada Takes Command in Katsina

The security architecture of North-West Nigeria received a decisive boost on Monday, January 5, 2026, as Umar Shehu Nadada,formally assumed duty as the 8th Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 14 Headquarters, Katsina.

With the handover completed, AIG Nadada steps into office carrying decades of frontline policing experience, strategic leadership, and a reputation for firm but people-centred law enforcement—qualities expected to redefine crime control and public confidence across the zone.

A seasoned officer of the Nigeria Police Force, AIG Nadada brings to Zone 14 a rich blend of operational depth, investigative expertise, and administrative mastery. His appointment signals renewed momentum in intelligence-led policing, crime prevention, and inter-agency collaboration at a time when security remains a top national priority.

Hailing from Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, AIG Nadada’s journey to the upper echelon of policing is anchored in solid academic and professional foundations. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology from Bayero University, Kano (1989), and later obtained a Master’s degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (2010).

Enlisted into the Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, he received professional training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Annex, Kaduna—marking the beginning of a distinguished career spanning over three decades.

Throughout his service years, AIG Nadada has held critical command and leadership positions across Nigeria, including Divisional Police Officer in multiple divisions in Niger, Ekiti, Kaduna and Anambra States; Assistant and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Nasarawa State; Commissioner of Police in both Katsina and Nasarawa States; and most recently, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in the Department of Research and Planning at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

His résumé reflects a rare blend of grassroots policing and high-level strategic planning—experience that places him in good stead to lead Zone 14 effectively.

Beyond field commands, the new AIG is widely trained at home and abroad, having attended top-level leadership, intelligence, fraud management and international law enforcement courses, including the prestigious Senior Executive Course 45 at NIPSS, Kuru, and leadership training at the China National Academy of Governance in Beijing.

A member of the National Institute (mni) and the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (MSPSP), AIG Nadada is widely regarded as a calm strategist with a firm operational backbone.

Upon assuming duty in Katsina, AIG Nadada called on residents of Katsina and Kaduna States to remain law-abiding and continue supporting the Police with timely and credible information to enable swift action against crime and criminality.

Married with children, the new Zone 14 Police boss assumes command at a time of high expectations—one many believe he is well prepared to meet.
