The North East Development Commission (NEDC) distributed assistive devices to about 180 persons with disabilities in Maiduguri.
The distribution event, organized in collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, took place at the Fosharms Hall in Maiduguri. This initiative is part of the NEDC’s ongoing efforts to support and empower vulnerable groups in the region.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Managing Director of Northeast Development Commssion NEDC, Mohamed Alkali, expressed deep concern about the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state. He emphasized that the commission prioritizes the development of the region and will continue to include PWDs in its programs.
Mohamed Alkali highlighted that the commission has purchased numerous assistive devices for persons with disabilities and will replicate this distribution gesture in the remaining five states of the North East Region. This is part of their broader commitment to ensure that PWDs are not left behind in the region’s development.
In a significant announcement, the MD directed that each beneficiary should be credited with the sum of 50,000 naira at the end of the event. This amount is intended to cover transport and feeding allowances, easing the burden on the recipients and ensuring they can fully benefit from the distributed devices.
Earlier, Dr. James Lando, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, expressed deep appreciation to the NEDC. He urged the commission not to relent in granting opportunities to PWDs, emphasizing that “there is ability in disability.” His remarks underscored the importance of continued support and inclusion for PWDs.
On behalf of persons with disabilities in Borno State, the Chairman, Muhammed Bukar, thanked the NEDC and its leadership. He called on his fellow members to continue giving their maximum support to the commission, recognizing the positive impact of its initiatives on their lives.
This event marks another milestone in the NEDC’s mission to foster inclusive development and provide critical support to those in need across the North East region.
