Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has formally protested the omission of key Borno transit corridors from the Federal Government’s proposed 2026 “Legacy Projects” road budget.
In a petition dated February 11, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the lawmaker described the current design of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe road corridor as “incomplete,” noting that it terminates in Gombe without extending into Borno State.
Citing details from page 8(a) of the Ministry’s 2026 budget presentation under the four Legacy Projects of the Renewed Hope Administration, Ndume argued that the road alignment excludes critical Borno hubs such as Biu, Damboa and Maiduguri.
“I write to draw your attention to a concern… where the road project from Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe terminates in Gombe without an inroad to Biu/Damboa/Maiduguri all in Borno State,” the letter stated.
The senator further reminded the Minister that of the six North-East states, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured electoral victory only in Borno during the 2023 general elections — a factor he believes should make the state a primary beneficiary of federal infrastructure expansion.
Ndume also lamented that Borno is not included in the NNPCL-funded Tax Credit road projects, describing the situation as a double setback for a state still grappling with security and reconstruction challenges.
“I therefore request your intervention in coming to the aid of our failed and critical roads in Borno State,” he appealed, while conveying assurances of high regard to the Minister.
The protest adds fresh political weight to ongoing debates over equitable infrastructure distribution under the Renewed Hope agenda.
Observers say attention will now turn to whether the Ministry of Works will adjust the project scope to accommodate Borno’s strategic corridors.
